We’ve got a new website, we’ve got seven projects in construction, we’ve got new team members…phew, there’s a lot going on.

Welcome to the September newsletter that was supposed to be the August newsletter and probably actually should’ve been the July newsletter!

Some of you may have noticed we’ve got a fresh new website, and new logo and branding to go with it – or maybe you didn’t.  Check out the new website here: dunnhillam.com.au.

Any of you who’ve been through this kind of branding exercise will know it’s a huge amount of work and we’re relieved to have it done. It was made fun by working with our new friends from the UK, Mytton Williams – who we found by searching for B Corp certified practices. Have a look at their work here: myttonwilliams.co.uk/.

Projects

A house in Rosedale

We are so close to finishing this beautiful house down in Rosedale. We’ll be getting some proper photos done once the landscaping is in, but in the meantime check out our new favourite outdoor shower! This also shows the remarkable change the copper goes through after only a few months in the weather.

Rebuild Cobargo: DAs Approved

We're thrilled to share that the DAs have been approved for the Village Square, Market Hall and Post Office in Cobargo!

DunnHillam have been working with the Cobargo Community Development Corporation to rebuild their beautiful town following the devastating Bush Fires of 2019-20. We would like to thank the Bega Shire Council for their support of these important projects. The outcome is a result of the hard work and commitment of many people, all who have a vision of a generous, friendly, sustainable Cobargo thriving well into the future. The buildings integrate economic vision and pragmatism with heritage sensitivity and a belief in the importance of public space in supporting resilient communities in regional towns.

Another project completed in Cobar

We are lucky to have many clients that we’ve completed multiple projects for- the township of Cobar is one of those repeat clients. We finished the Cobar Museum in 2021, and went on to renovate the Cobar Youth and Community Centre in 2022. Right now we’re in construction on two more important community buildings (see “In Construction” section).

We understand the value of good work and building strong relationships with our clients (and consultants), which in some cases have opened multiple project opportunities, as it has in Cobar.

Completed in April this year, is the upgrade to The Cobar Youth + Community Centre or better known in house as ‘The Youthie’. We took a minimal intervention approach to improve light and ventilation, increase amenity and accessibility throughout – including a slalom style ramped entry that is already evidently a hit with the local kids.

We currently have seven (!!) projects on site. We’ll be keeping you updated on all of these as they near completion, but in the meantime check out these cool drone photos from David Payne Constructions of the Ward Oval Pavilion and the Cobar Early Learning Centre.

Team updates

Congratulations to Sophie Canaris on being appointed Associate at DunnHillam and to Geremy Yip and Jackson Birrell on their recent registrations as Architects. Thanks also to Joel Ransley and Rachel Liang for recently joining the team (and bringing in homemade baked goods!). Finally, farewell but not goodbye to Rose Davies who has accepted a role working with our good friends at GANSW.

Championing architectural education

Congratulations to Ashley Dunn, who has been appointed to the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning as an Associate Professor of Practice in Architecture.  

He runs the studio “The Future of Towns: Sustainable Urban Design and Architecture for Regional Places”, advocating for a broader evaluation of high streets – one that goes beyond the traditional focus on retail and commerce, to consider and promote the delivery of wide-ranging public value and greater local impact.

Last week, he led a field trip to Cobar and Bourke to visit local landmarks, including Glenn Murcutt’s Sound Chapel and DunnHillam’s recently completed The Great Cobar Museum and “The Youthie”, and the  beautiful Lands Department Building in Bourke.

Perspectives

Dogs on websites

It feels like there is a lot of news out there at the moment. We’re going to a referendum, the IPCC report is more depressing than ever, the Matildas are awesome…but in the midst of all that we have an important question to ask you. Should our office dogs be on our website?

We took some very handsome photos of them, but in the end decided to leave them out. But just to cheer up the end of this newsletter, here’s Molly, Chief Excitement Officer (CEO) (pictured left) and Albert, Director of Walks (pictured right).
